Star in Your Own Reality Show

A recent study of almost 300,000 adult Americans showed that unhappy people spent 30 percent more time watching television than happy people. Which came first? That wasn’t clear, but if those unhappy people are watching the news, I’d be willing to bet it’s not cheering them up.

Doesn’t it make sense that you would be happier if you watched less TV? If you had 30 percent more free time you could do a lot of things that seem hard to fit into your day.

You don’t have to go cold turkey! You could try just skipping one half-hour program, maybe one you’re only half-watching while you wait for something better to come on. What would you do with those 30 minutes?

You could exercise: Lack of time is one of the all-time favorite excuses for not exercising. Or you could SLEEP! A lot of people are walking around suffering from sleep deprivation. That’s another source of stress. Wouldn’t a little more sleep make you feel better?

Full disclosure. I’m not one of those people who never watch TV. I am a work in progress. Maybe we can do this together and check in on how the TV-reduction is going.

Let’s picture starring in our own reality shows:

  • This is me living my real life instead of zoning out in front of the TV.
  • This is me going to an art class after dinner.
  • This is me walking two miles.
  • This is me meeting a friend for coffee

Let’s try turning off the TV just for one evening and see what we find to do. It may be fun just listening to the quiet.
